Pay a Parking Ticket or Transit Citation

Free language assistance is available. For assistance, please call the number on the back of your citation, then wait. Teletypewriter users may also wait. Hold music is provided at no additional cost.

Got a ticket? It happens to the best of us, and to most of the rest of us too. Citations can be paid online, by phone, by mail or in person, and you have 21 calendar days from the date it was issued before late penalties start adding up.

Have your citation number and license plate ready. The citation number is the long one near the top of the envelope, printed in a font chosen specifically to be read by nobody. If the ticket blew away, you can look it up by plate below.

Your citation is in a little envelope under the windshield wiper. You probably already found it.

Ways to pay

💻

Online

Pay with a credit or debit card any time of day. A small convenience fee applies, which is more of an inconvenience fee if we're being honest.

☎️

By phone

Call the automated payment line, say your citation number slowly, and repeat it when the system asks if you meant a different number.

✉️

By mail

Send a check or money order with the payment slip. Write the citation number on the check. Do not send cash, coins, or a strongly worded letter instead.

🏢

In person

Visit the Customer Service Center Monday through Friday. Take a number, take a seat, take a moment to reflect on where you parked.

Contest a citation

If you believe a citation was issued in error, you may request a review within 21 days. Please be specific. "I was only gone for a minute" has been tried.

  1. Gather your evidence: photos of signs, meter receipts, a timestamped picture of your car being extremely legally parked.
  2. Submit a review request online or by mail with your citation number and a short explanation.
  3. Wait for a written decision. If you disagree with it, you may request an administrative hearing.
  4. If you disagree with that, you may appeal to Superior Court, and also you may want to take a walk.

Payment plans and programs

If you can't pay the full amount at once, you may qualify for a payment plan, a community service option, or a reduced amount based on income. Enrolling stops late penalties from being added while you're in the program.

Who qualifies for a payment plan?

Anyone with unpaid citations who is not currently in a payment plan, owes over a modest minimum, and can make a small first payment. Plans can be set up for several months.

Can I do community service instead?

Yes, for qualifying citations, hours can be applied in place of payment through partner organizations around the city.

My car was towed. Is that this page?

No, that's the Towed Vehicles page, which is a different page with a different, larger number on it.

Can a vacuum pay my parking ticket?

It can make it disappear from this page. That is not the same thing.

FRAUD ALERT: This page is not the SFMTA. It is a pretend page for vacuuming and can't take payments of any kind. Real citations are paid at sfmta.com.
